Karbi Anglong Agreement Signed by
About 1,000 Karbi fighters surrendered in February 2021 to the Assam government. About 150 of these Karbi fighters reached the northern bloc, where the Karbi Anglong agreement was signed, and about 15 of them were present at the meeting. Under the agreement, armed groups will avoid violence and join the democratic process, while the government will facilitate the rehabilitation of its cadres. Former Assam Prime Minister Sarbananda Sonowal called the deal a “historic” decision on the part of the centre. Referring to previous agreements, Shah said they had signed the Bodoland Peace Agreement (Assam), the Bru Rehabilitation Agreement and the Tripura National Liberation Front (Tripura) and that 80 percent of the conditions set out in these agreements had been met. Members of the Karbi group were received by The Union`s Home Minister, Ajay Bhalla, before the signing of the agreement and encouraged to enter the mainstream to ensure law and order and peace in Assam. After signing the agreement, Amit Shah said that in the history of the Assam and Karbi region, the agreement would be written in gold terms, as more than 1,000 cadres from five different organizations laid down their arms to join the mainstream. “The central government and the government of Assam are fully committed to their rehabilitation,” Shah said. “Now lower Assam has been turned into a peaceful area.
